Hi All,

Just think, in exactly one year from now, many of you will already be in Istanbul having arrived a day or so early for the Siege. You’ll maybe already have heard the Muezzin’s call to prayer echoing across the city from the Blue Mosque, and Ayasofya. Perhaps you went on a trip up the Bosporus towards the Euxine in the path of Jason on his journey to find the Golden Fleece, or visited the Modern Art Museum, or the Victorian extravaganza that is the Dolmabahçe Palace. Maybe you went out for a meal with fellow Siegers in Sultanahmet, or over the water in the Taksim area, or had look at the beautiful Iznik tiles in the Rustem Paºa Mosque, or took afternoon tea at the Pera Palace hotel. You might have gone along for a bit of a whirl at a Dervish Ceremony, or to a Turkish Folk night, or just tucked yourself up in bed with a copy of Pawn in Frankincense.

But on Monday the 10th you’ll get up knowing that in the afternoon, sometime between 1400 and 1600 you’ll be arriving in the foyer of the Yaºmak Sultan Hotel, to register for the Siege and obtain your welcome pack, meet Simon and Olive, and the other Siegers who will be hanging out there in the Foyer or Bar.

And, at 17:00, you’ll walk down the stairs (or go in the lift) to the Yaºmak’s conference room with the other delegates for the “Istanbul 101” talk where we will welcome you (again!), and give you a little of the history of Constantinople, Byzantium, Istanbul and Turkey*, and also information about how the Siege will work and some dos and don’ts and travel tips for modern Istanbu (cabs, trams), what to do if you get lost, and probably a little bazaar technique for those of you not used to haggling in eastern marketplaces.

After this session, there’ll be a little time to prepare before heading up to the Olive Restaurant, with its glass walls on 3 sides and views over to Ayasofya, Topkapi, the Golden Horn and Galata, to catch up with old friends and make new ones, enjoy some delicious Turkish cuisine, swap travellers’ tales and to speculate what the next day will bring.

366 days...

*Though it’ll be a lot shorter than the talk on the Knights of St John was on the first evening in Malta!
